It is with deep shame we present you with our greatest secret.
For many years matte painters and animators all over the world have hidden a dark secret that a few years ago got exposed at Walt Disney.
Hidden i movie backgrounds and poster graphics are small cheeky punch lines, for the enjoyment of the artist alone. So also for our AD and graphic designer – specializing in mate painting for movies and general graphics – allthough limited to close and well known customers. When the assignment came in to do a movie poser for the wonderful movie “Amalia”, the starting point was a photo of the leading actress standing in a garden in full costume, and we were ask to use it to create a setting that captured the story. It would contain a light house and three men proposing to the woman.
Our matte painter painted the actress into a setting with a light house in the background but felt the three men would be too cluttering, Instead he painted three letters from the men, flying in the wind. What our customer did not know, was that one of the letters had a text that was very carefully written. Naturally the text would not be visible in the poster, but had the customer zoomed in on the high resolution poster, he would indeed be able to read it. The customer was a well know hard core Star Wars fan, while our matte painter is a well known hard core Star Trek fan. So naturally the text argued why Star Trek is far better than Star Wars. A shameful propaganda that we off course informed our client about…after the poster was printed.
